Rooted from a family of stars, senior distance runner Chloe Hassman is determined to finish her final season on the Penn track and field team with a bang.

However, Hassman is not alone in this journey — she is one of four siblings who are all track athletes and absolute studs. As Hassman’s career comes to a close, both her previous individual successes and future ambitions have been fueled by her family's legacy.

Hassman is a 2024 Second-Team All-Ivy and 2022 Ivy Heps Champion and primarily races the 800-meter, but she also proves a strong competitor in the 1000-meter and 1500-meter. As of this season, her most recent competition was the South Florida Invitational, posting a time of 2:08.38 in the 800-meter, securing second place. This past weekend at the 2025 Penn Relays, Hassman helped her relay team to a sixth-place finish in the 4x800m relay Championship of America. Needless to say, she is a powerful force for the Penn women's track team.

Hassman asserted that from a young age, she and her siblings excelled in both basketball and track. However, ultimately, they all pursued track at the collegiate level. Waverly Hassman, Chloe's sister, is a current sophomore at Northeastern University.

“She was able to be just a wonderful sister and family member, but also a huge competitor,” Waverly Hassman said. “[Chloe Hassman] really put her all into all her sports, and obviously we always wanted to beat each other, but at the end of the day, she was still very loving and caring.”

While both sisters competed alongside one another in high school, this never presented as a hindrance in their relationship. Chloe Hassman added that her siblings have remained a constant support system for her throughout her career.

“Anytime I wasn't feeling motivated about going out on a run or something, we would just go together,” Chloe Hassman recalls.

As the Penn Relays begins and the season comes to an end, Chloe Hassman spoke on her goals for the relays as well as for the remainder of her collegiate career. Chloe Hassman explained that she could never have imagined the level of success and progression she has experienced at Penn.

“When I was a freshman, my fastest 800m was 2:15 — I ended up running 2:11 by the end of freshman year,” Chloe Hassman said. “That was a big jump, but I didn't really think I would be running around, you know, 2:05. I never thought those would be my goals. And making regionals, I didn't think that would be a goal for me.”

While Chloe Hassman's successes can be attributed to her dedication to the sport and support of her family, it's important not to overlook the impact of her team.

Chloe Hassman emphasized that the energy on the Penn women's track team is contagious and that the ability to watch her teammates develop over the last four years has been incredibly uplifting.

“It's really inspiring to watch someone progress over the four years. Maybe they were kind of, like, the same speed as you, and they just kind of had a breakout season,” Chloe Hassman said. “Now you're like, 'okay, well, if they did that, like, I can do that too.'”

Chloe Hassman knows the infectious power of teammates having a good race. It goes without saying that the support of her team, paired with the motivation drawn from her family and her personal ambitions, has played a vital role in her outstanding career.

As Chloe Hassman prepares to close her final season at Penn, she is driven by not only her incredible goals but also the amazing support and legacy of her family in tandem with her teammates' remarkable energy. Post-Penn, she notes that she’ll be working in New York next year — and plans to keep her athletic pursuits alive.

“There's a ton of running clubs out there for, like, people that ran in college, if they want to keep running competitively,” Chloe Hassman said.

It’s clear that Chloe Hassman doesn’t see this season as the end of her athletic journey — track is a lifelong passion for her. As the finish line of her collegiate career approaches, she’s ready to leave it all on the track — not just for herself, but for the teammates and family who have supported her every step of the way.
